Want To Live And Work On Wisconsin’s Sand Island This Summer?

Volunteering is a great way to get out and try new things while helping out and while there are a wide variety of volunteer opportunities available, this may be the most unique one yet!

On Thursday, February 7, Apostle Islands National Lakeshore reached out through their Facebook page looking for volunteers to live on an island this summer. While there will be hard work at times, it sounds like an amazing experience for whoever is selected.

Their post begins with an intriguing question: "How would you like to live on an island in the middle of Gichigami (Lake Superior) this summer?"

It only gets more interesting from there.

We're currently looking for a set of volunteers to volunteer on Waabaabikaa-minis (Sand Island) from June 10 to July 1 this summer. Dates may flex due to weather conditions. Volunteers must be prepared to stay on the island the entire time and may not be able to get out there right away or get off the island right away. Gichigami (Lake Superior) makes that decision for us!

Apostle Islands National Lakeshore goes on to say that this position requires volunteers to spend a minimum of three consecutive weeks living while serving as a Sand Island Lighthouse Keeper & Campground Host.

They add that the position involves meeting a variety of people, including boaters, hikers, kayakers, and campers. You'll also be giving lighthouse tours, managing the campground, and doing daily maintenance duties. You'd also serve as the primary contact for visitors to the island.

Keep in mind that as cool as this may sound, this position does require hard work and dedication.
