Missouri Lawmakers need to End Child Marriages ASAP

Lawmakers in Missouri are trying to put an end to child marriages in the Show-Me State once and for all according to an article from the Missouri Independent. The law in Missouri currently allows 16 and 17-year-olds to get married to anyone under 21, and that is what lawmakers are going after.

In the article from the Missouri Independent, they say, "The legislation discussed Monday afternoon would prohibit issuing marriage licenses to anyone under the age of 18 under any circumstances." This is a MASSIVE step forward for Missouri because Missouri up until 2018 would allow 15-year-olds to marry. The international human rights standard for marriage is 18, this new law would get Missouri to meet that standard. This is the BIGGEST no-brainer I have laid my eyes on in a long time. No one should be allowed to be married until they are 18. 18 is the standard in the modern world for voting, marriages, tobacco, joining the military, and everything else that comes with being an adult (except for drinking, running for president, and so on). I understand that these laws had probably been in place for hundreds of years and back in the 1800s marrying at 15 wasn't a big deal because life expectancy was like 50 years old, but these laws needed to be updated in 2018. Shame on Missouri for not making it 18 back then, hopefully, they can right the wrong now.
