Suddenly, Missouri & Illinois Most Dangerous for Winter Driving
This thought came to mind as I was driving on Highway 61 in Missouri Friday night. There was some rain, but temps were close enough to freezing I was aware of possible slick spots. There's a good reason to be paranoid in Missouri and Illinois this time of year as both states now ranked among the most dangerous for winter driving.
Most of Missouri and Illinois has yet to have a real snow storm this season. It's just a matter of time before winter driving is a reality again though. It's good to mentally prepare yourself and know that if you driving in Missouri or Illinois, you're traveling in two of America's most dangerous states for winter driving. This fact was just confirmed by the website Money Geek. You can see their infographic shows both states are among the top 15 worst winter road places in the United States.
We've recently shared details of dangerous roads in both Missouri and Illinois. They're even more terrifying during the winter months. When you factor in the fact that Missouri was listed as one of the top 5 states for worst drivers, the potential winter driving problems multiply.
Why are Missouri and Illinois ranked so poorly for winter driving?
Money Geek said they determined this ranking based on "NHTSA's Fatality Analysis Reporting System for 2019 to 2021 — the most recent data available — to rank the worst states for winter driving". In other words, data + science = result. Both Missouri and Illinois failed those metrics apparently.
