I have a friend who has always drawn a parallel between pizza and sex. His theory for both of those things is that "even when it's not that great, it's still pretty awesome."

Having known him for several decades at this point, I'm quite certain he has far more experience with pizza than he does in the other department, seeing as how he's never had to give a pizza half of everything he owns.

But, I digress.

I think we're all in agreement that Illinois, especially Northern Illinois, is chock-full of outstanding pizza joints, and we're never going to get all Illinoisans to agree on which spot reigns supreme. However, we can take a look at what contributors on a review site think is Illinois' best.

Yelp Recently Released Their 2024 List Of The 100 Best Pizza Places In The United States, And An Illinois Joint Comes In At Number-One In The Nation

For those who are unfamiliar, Yelp.com and the Yelp app are all about crowd-sourcing reviews about businesses, and certain reviewers are given Yelp Elite status, which means that they're Yelp's most trusted and passionate reviewers. The Yelp Elites are the ones who voted on this year's list.

Even though an Illinois pizza place takes the number-one position for the whole country, and six Illinois pizza joints in total make the list, New York and California lead all states with 10 pizza joints each on the Yelp list.

Enough about other states and their pizzas, let's get to what the Yelp Elites say is our country's best pizza joint:

Pequod's Pizza, Located At 2207 North Clybourn Avenue In Chicago Takes The Crown This Year As The Best Pizza Place In America

I can't comment on this one personally, since I've never been in the place, but I've heard enough people I know rave about Pequod's Pizza that it's definitely on my Illinois pizza joint bucket list. (click here for Yelp's full write up on Pequod's Pizza)

Yelp.com:

Started in the suburb of Morton Grove (where there’s still a location) by the late Burt Katz in 1971, Pequod’s developed a cult following early on. The current owners took over in the mid-1980s, expanding the menu and opening the now-famous Lincoln Park restaurant. Not surprisingly, it gets crowded, and creating perfection takes time (about 45 minutes from placing your order to its arrival on your table), but Yelpers say it’s worth the wait.

Enough history. Let's check out the pizza:
