Oldest in the Hoosier State

Here lately I've been on a kick of learning about some of the oldest places around Indiana, and through this journey through Hoosier history, I've learned a lot of really neat facts about our state.  For instance, Indiana's oldest store was founded the same year Abraham Lincoln was elected President, and it's STILL open to this day!  I also learned recently that the oldest continually open high school in the state is located right here in Evansville.  Oh, and did you know that the oldest city in Indiana is older than the United States of America? So now I feel is a great time to raise a glass to Indiana's oldest brewery!

Indiana's Oldest Brewery

The oldest brewery in the state of Indiana is none other than Terre Haute Brewing Company.  What's cool, is not only is Terre Haute Brewing Company the oldest in Indiana, it's the second oldest in the country.

Terre Haute Brewing Company is Indiana’s oldest and America’s second-oldest brewery in operation. In its more than 100-year history, THBC grew to become the seventh-largest brewery in the USA. The brewery has been skillfully resurrected to preserve its heritage, and brews modern, high-grade beers to honor its legacy.

In 1837 a brewery that would become the Terre Haute Brewing Company (THBC) opened its doors.  In the year 1892 THBC became the 7th largest brewery in the country and produced more than 100,000 barrels a year.

Surviving Prohibition

From 1918 to 1933 THBC had to switch gears to survive prohibition.  According to THBC, they had to shift their name to the Terre Haute C.V. Company.  Under the new name, they produced a non-alcoholic version of their flagship beer, Champagne Velvet.  Unfortunately, the brewery had to suspend operations in 1928.  In 1934 the brewery was purchased by a Terre Haute native who reopened THBC on St. Patrick's Day 1934.
