Super Bowl LIX is set for Sunday and will likely feature several new commercials. None of them, though, will be as good as this one, which was produced right here in Minnesota.

After sitting the past few years out during the pandemic, most of the big-name advertisers were back with brand-new commercials during last year's Super Bowl in Las Vegas. It's a trend that's expected to continue this year too, as Super Bowl LIX (that's 59, in case you don't speak Roman Numerals) gets rolling for the 11th time from Caesars Super Dome down in New Orleans.

And those firms buying commercials during the game will be paying dearly for that air time, too. This USA Today story says Fox, the network broadcasting the Super Bowl this year, is charging around $8 million for a 30-second commercial this year! That's a pretty big price tag. Let's hope the entertainment factor is equally big, right?

If you want a sneak peek, some advertisers have already put their commercials online. Like this commercial for Hellman's Mayonaise, which reunites Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan and updates their classic scene from the movie When Harry Met Sally. Some look kind of clever, though none of them seem as good as this classic Super Bowl commercial that's still my favorite-- and it's one that was produced right here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

The commercial I'm talking about is now over 25 years old. (Where does the time go?!?) It made its debut during Super Bowl XXXIV, back in January of 2000. That was the year the Rams were also involved (they beat the Titans), and it was also the year a lot of 'dot com' companies bought commercials during the Big Game.

One of them was the firm, Electronic Data Systems, or EDS. Their commercial, ‘Cat Herders’, was described by an advertising trade magazine like this:

“Cowboys talk about their life herding cats, describing the challenges of taking domesticated kitties (as opposed to longhorns) through the open country to their destination at the ranch.”

If you have cats, like we do, you'll no doubt get a kick out it. And, it's extra cool in that it was produced right here in the North Star State by a Minnesota firm, too– at the ad agency, Fallon, in Minneapolis.
