It doesn't matter if you're religious or not, you have to admit that churches hold a special place in each Illinois community. Every building is so beautiful and unique inside and out. No two are alike. That's why it's sad if one closes because most likely it's going to be torn down and lost forever.

Church Closes In Illinois Town

The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church located on Lake Opeka was a big part of the Des Plaines community for over 70 years. It's a town landmark that many residents appreciate. Unfortunately, it closed. It sat there for a few years unused on some very valuable property. The plan was to tear it down and replace it with something new that would be used.

Local Business Man Saves Historic Illinois Church Building

David Villegas is a local businessman who grew up in the area. He enjoyed riding his bike by the church each day. Then, he heard the plan of the building being torn down. It made him upset so he decided to do something about it. He teamed up with restaurateur Tim Canning and Chef Maya Nahouli and then came the idea of Foxtail On The Lake. They purchased the old church and went to work.

For close to 70 years, the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on Lake Opeka in Des Plaines was a place where the community could receive the Lord's Table.

 

Now the 15,000-square-foot building is home to The Foxtail On The Lake, a modern Mediterranean restaurant serving brick chicken, beef shawarma, and paella.
