You may be wondering why is it even a cause for concern to recycle a pizza box. The explanation is simple and makes sense. Republic Services, which has landfills and recycling centers in Illinois, explains it like this;

If the box is greasy, cheesy and has stuck on food bits, it shouldn't go in the recycling bin . The box is no longer recyclable, but even worse, that grease can contaminate the other objects in the recycling bin and make it all unusable.

The entire box doesn't necessarily have to avoid the recycling bin, the tops might be OK since they're usually clean and grease-free.
