Make Halloween Costumes Work Overtime

I believe every parent with young kids should have one goal on Halloween: get the most mileage out of those costumes you probably spent way too much money on.

Obviously, wearing the same costume multiple years is a great way to get the most bang for your buck, but many kids don't want to do that.

I know people who have done costume swaps with friends which is kind of genius because each kid gets a "new" costume for Halloween and parents don't have to shell out a wad of cash for it.

Parents can also plan multiple trick-or-treating stops based on the locations and times, and this list will help you do that in the Rockford area this year!

One More Halloween Costume Tip for Parents

At this point, we're all hoping the weather will be mild on Halloween night in Northern Illinois, but make sure your kids' costumes are roomy enough to fit over multiple layers of clothing in case it is not.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have candy to buy, costumes to get ready, and one more very important job to do: deciding what adult "treats" to hand out to parents taking their littles trick-or-treating. (Yes, we are the house that hands out booze on Halloween night.)

LOOK: How Halloween has changed in the past 100 years

Stacker compiled a list of ways that Halloween has changed over the last 100 years, from how we celebrate it on the day to the costumes we wear trick-or-treating. We’ve included events, inventions, and trends that changed the ways that Halloween was celebrated over time. Many of these traditions were phased out over time. But just like fake blood in a carpet, every bit of Halloween’s history left an impression we can see traces of today.
