Four Strangers Save Wisconsin Driver In Cardiac Arrest

Some days we all need a reminder that good people still exist in this world, and this story out of Janesville, Wisconsin is a pretty incredible example of that.

Wisconsin Driver Suffers Medical Emergency

On August 2, 2026, a propane delivery driver named Jeff Sheldon from Janesville was going about his day when everything suddenly went terribly wrong.

WKOW reports Sheldon was nearing the end of his shift when he started to feel unwell, blacked out, and suffered cardiac arrest. Sheldon's foot hit the accelerator, causing his truck to drive off the road, hitting three cars in a busy intersection before coming to a stop in a ditch. But that's not the worst of it. Sheldon's propane truck was also leaking, making an already terrifying situation even more dangerous.

Four Strangers Rush to Help

Thankfully, four complete strangers stopped and jumped in to help.

One of those people was Janesville resident and retired U.S. Army platoon sergeant Paul Cunningham, who pulled his car onto a median in the intersection and quickly jumped out and ran towards Sheldon's truck.

Cunningham told the GazetteXtra:

Old Sergeant C.’ just took over. I told a bunch of people coming out of their cars, ‘Check the people in those crashed vehicles!’ I was yelling things over my shoulder, and for whatever reason, my focus was on the truck. I was shouting for everybody to stay back from (Sheldon’s) truck. I was afraid it might explode.

Cunningham knew immediately that Jeff Sheldon was in medical distress. Three other men rushed to the truck to help, including off-duty police officer Zack Anderson, who began performing CPR to keep Sheldon alive while waiting for emergency responders to arrive.

Here's the part of the story that really gave me chills.

Sheldon was without a heartbeat for about 30 minutes, yet somehow, he survived.

Terrifying Situation Turns Into a Friendship

What makes the story even better is that these life-saving strangers didn't just disappear from Sheldon's life after he was taken to the hospital. Several days later Sheldon reunited with Paul Cunningham and Zack Anderson in the hospital and the trio has stayed connected.

To me, this story is a good reminder that you never know when you might be the person who gets the chance to help someone in need.

You don't have to be a doctor or a firefighter to make a difference. Sometimes it's simply being willing to stop and doing what you can to save a life.
