You might've heard about some major changes that are coming to Evansville-area Schnucks grocery stores. I decided to check with the Schnucks corporate office in St. Louis, MO, to see if we had all of the facts.

Here's what you need to know if your checkout routine involves the self-checkout.

10-Item Self-Checkout Limit:

Across all Schnucks stores, self-checkout lanes will now be limited to 10 items or less. This aims to streamline self-checkout for smaller baskets and keep staffed lanes flowing for larger hauls.

Evansville Cashless Pilot:

As part of a test program, all self-checkout stations in Schnucks' five Evansville-area stores will no longer accept cash payments or dispense cash back. If you're using cash in Evansville, head to a regular checkout lane.

What it means for you:

  • Smaller shops? Stick to self-checkout for a speedy transaction.
  • Bigger basket or prefer cash? Head to a staffed checkout lane.
  • Cash users? Plan on using a staffed lane for now.

Why the changes?

Schnucks says the 10-item limit aims to improve efficiency and reduce wait times in self-checkout lanes. The Evansville cashless pilot is testing the feasibility and customer response to a potential future shift.

Locking Up the Liquor?

I know that some of you are wondering about the liquor going behind lock and key. There are no plans for this system to be utilized in the Evansville-area stores, as Schnucks Corporate told me in an email.

"Freedom Cases are being piloted in select Schnucks liquor departments in the St. Louis area in place of traditional locked liquor cases. There are no pilot stores in the Evansville area at this time."

Have you heard rumors about Schnucks ditching the $10 bill?

Fear not, fellow grocery shoppers! It's a total myth. Paul Simon with Schnucks Media Relations called me and confirmed they're NOT eliminating any bills. He went on to say that this $10 rumor had really grown some legs through social media! However, he emphasized that customers can spend $10 bills at Schnucks, and they can receive $10 bills as change through a checkout lane with a cashier.
