Illinois Pet Owners: How to Keep Pets Calm During Fireworks

Pet owners, Fourth of July is creeping up on us and we all know what that means: fireworks season can be rough (no pun intended).

Between Fourth of July, backyard celebrations, and festivals, it feels like there's something always booming around town.  And while we, as humans, might be enjoying fireworks shows, our pets will have their tails tucked between their legs hiding under the dining room table.

My cats are always confused when fireworks pop off because they think a warzone is happening outside.  It makes me sad!  I've never found any tricks that really work to keep my furbabies calm during this season, so I turned to Facebook.

Rockford friends came through with their most effective ways to calm their pets this time of year.  Have any of these worked for you?

• Turn the TV up loud enough to drown out the sound
• White noise machines
• Take cover in sound-proof rooms
• CBD treats or calming sprays
• Use a weighted or calming vest
• Close windows, blinds, and curtains
• Take them on long walks during the day to tire them out at night

I'll definitely try to wear my cats out, so they are more inclined to be exhausted by the time fireworks start popping off.  If you're setting off fireworks, it's always nice to give your neighbors a heads up because a little warning can go a long way for everyone around you.
