If you drive a Kia or Hyundai in Illinois, you might want to pay close attention to this major recall announcement.

Here's what you need to know:

Kia is recalling about 250,547 vehicles, and Hyundai is recalling around 85,043, because of a serious issue with fuel tanks.  Yes, fuel tanks are melting.  Not exactly something you want happening mid-ride, or at all!  The NHTSA actually flagged this as a big safety risk, and both brands are working fast to fix it.

So, what do you do if you own one of these cars?  Both Kia and Hyundai are offering free fixes - all you have to do is bring in your vehicle to a local car dealership, and they'll inspect it for you.  For Hyundais, the dealership will also check and replace a valve and update the engine control unit software.  Basically, they're covering all their bases.

Kia says they will mail recall notification letters on January 16th, 2026.  Thought it seems like a long time away, you don't have to wait!  On December 1st, VINs for the affected cars will be searchable on NHTSA.gov, so you can check sooner than later if your car is involved in this major recall.

If you have further questions, you can contact Kia (800-333-4542) and use code SC356.

Honestly, this is one of those recalls you don't want to shrug off.  A melting fuel tank?  Yeah, take it seriously.  Call your local dealership if you have any questions and make sure to keep an eye on your fuel tank.  Better safe than sorry!
