If you’re flying out of O’Hare Airport in Illinois, here’s what really happens when you don’t have a REAL ID and how it could cost you extra time, money, and major stress at TSA.

Honestly, I didn't think it would be a big deal since it's not totally required just yet.  I knew about the REAL ID stuff, I heard people saying they're switching to it, but I didn't realize how much it would change my experience getting through airport security.  I figured my regular driver's license would suffice, like always.  I guess I was wrong!

The second I handed my ID to the TSA agent at O'Hare, I could tell something was off.  She didn't immediately hand back my ID and say thank you, instead she looked at my license and stated I didn't comply with their new policy.  She proceeded to give me a piece of paper that said in big, bold letters, "NO REAL I.D.".  Then, told me I had to either bring my passport next time or get a REAL I.D. before traveling again, or it could result in major delays at TSA.

Honestly, it felt like getting a warning slip from school, but for an adult who apparently can't keep up with government requirements.

Though it didn't take me long to get through security, I know others are probably going through longer verification processes.  If you don't have a REAL I.D., I highly suggest you get it as soon as possible, especially if you're a frequent flyer.  It'll be better than paying the $18 fine they want to start charging travelers without it!
