Don’t Risk It — Passing a Stopped School Bus in Illinois Is Against the Law
I will never understand the people who think it's okay to fly past a school bus when their stop arm is out for students getting off the bus. In Illinois, it's going to cost you.
I've seen it time and time again. Person in front of me is impatient, late for work, doesn't want to be stuck behind a school bus longer than they have to and decide to drive around the bus when its stop arm is out. In Illinois, it's the law to stop for a school bus with its arm out and lights are flashing.
Illinois State Police have been very clear about this for many, many years: you pass a bus, you can get fined up to $300, plus your driver's license suspended for three months on your first offense.
WHO WANTS THAT? NOT ME. NOT YOU. DON'T DO IT.
It's not even worth the consequence.

With school back in session, there are buses and children everywhere. Kids are truly unpredictable where they might dart across the street without looking or they dropped their notebook. This is also why these laws exist. So nobody, whether it's a student or a driver, is put at risk of being part of a fatal collision.
So please, don't risk it. Missing the green light or being late to work doesn't even compare to the damage you could cause on the road.
