"Your children need your presence more than your presents." This is one of my favorite quotes by Jesse Jackson.

It really conveys a huge message in such few words. 2016 is a busy time to live in. Moms and dads both working, single parent households, the pressure of how your life is 'supposed to be' according to TV and social media. Parents are under a lot of pressure. Mix that in with a child, or multiple children, their activities, trying to have a social life of your own, or date nights with your spouse. It's is easy to lose that quality time with our children that they really crave and let them occupy their lives with 'things' instead.

A local dad is trying to remind parents what is really important in life. Jon Recknagel has created a YouTube channel called One Fun Thing, according to wifr.com. The channel consists of him and his 3-year-old son Liam doing one fun thing every day, hence the name of the channel. And it doesn't necessarily have to be something extravagant. It could just be something little like going to a park or going swimming. The purpose is to show families how important spending quality time with your children really is.

So go show this local dad some support and check out his channel. And while your at it, when you see your kids this afternoon or evening, make sure you really engage them. Ask them about their day, go for a walk or a bike ride, eat dinner together, read them a bedtime story, sing them a lullaby. Whatever that little special thing you may do with them tonight is, you will be creating a memory that will last a lifetime. And it will be so much better for them than staring at the TV or computer screen for the night.
