Last Chance for Yard Waste Pickup in Rockford Before Winter Hits
If you’ve still got a pile of leaves sitting in the corner of your yard like an abandoned campfire, good news: Rockford is giving you one last week to clean things up before winter officially wins. The City of Rockford has announced that the final week of residential yard waste collection for 2025 will run Monday, December 1, through Thursday, December 5. After that, your yard debris officially becomes décor until next year.
Rockford’s Final Yard Waste Week: What You Need to Know

Once December 5 passes, the only remaining chance to offload yard waste will be during the annual Christmas Tree collection in early January 2026. After that, pickup won’t resume until the compost site reopens in the spring, because nothing says “spring in Rockford” like the sound of yard bags slapping in the wind.
What You Can Put Out
According to the city, yard waste must follow some pretty specific rules (Rockford loves a good rule). Acceptable containers include:
- Compostable paper bags, or
- 32-gallon or smaller cans marked with a large, extremely visible “X.”
Bundles of twigs and branches are allowed if they’re:
- No more than 4 feet long,
- No more than 2 feet in diameter, and
- Tied with string or twine, not wire, tape, or your leftover Christmas lights.

What Rockford Will Not Take
Tree stumps, root balls, dirt, mulch, and anything over 50 pounds are a hard no. Yard waste also can’t be mixed with garbage or placed in plastic bags… because of course it can’t.
