Rockford’s Oldest House Is Still Standing And Here’s The Inside

There is a cobblestone house on Broadway that has stood the test of time. The home is 178 years old, based on this article posted to Rockford Public Library's website. After the house was built only two families lived in it for just over 100 years, before being sold and turned into an antique shop. Since then it's remained commercial property. There isn't solid proof behind the building process of the house except for the assumption that the owner, Elijah L. Herrick used stones from the Rock River to build the home. A Wikipedia article claims Herrick was likely a mason.

Herrick came from Massachusetts to Rockford in the mid-1830s, though he probably stopped in New York on the way and came to learn of the style.

The home (building) is 4 bedrooms, 2 baths, and a 1/2 bath but has mainly been a commercial space for some time.
