Rose McGowan Indicted on Cocaine Possession Charges, Faces 10 Years Behind Bars
Rose McGowan faces a decade in prison after being indicted for felony cocaine possession, and will face trial Tuesday (June 12) just seven months after her arrest.
According to Us Weekly, McGowan maintains her innocence, and insists that she was only arrested in the first place because she has spoken out so vocally about sexual assault and taken aim at powerful men.
“Rose steadfastly maintains her innocence," McGowan's lawyer Jose Baez said. "These charges would have never been brought if it weren’t for her activism as a voice for women everywhere. I assure you, this selective prosecution will be met with a strong defense.”
The Charmed actress was arrested in November 2017 in Loudoun County, Virginia for felony possession of a narcotic, turned herself in and was ultimately released on a $5,000 bond.
McGowan had publicly accused disgraced film magnate Harvey Weinstein of rape just before the warrant was issued, noting to a crowd at The Women’s Convention "I have been silenced for 20 years. I have been slut-shamed. I have been harassed. I’ve been maligned. And you know what? I’m just like you."
McGowan tweeted in light of the warrant just days later, noting: “Are they trying to silence me? There is a warrant out for my arrest in Virginia. What a load of HORSES---.”
The actress confirmed in January at the TCA panel that audiences will see her arrest play out on her E! series, Citizen Rose.
“Yes, you see my friends, you see me have to be arrested,” she said. “You see a lot. You see fun. It’s every scope of human emotion. Why? Because I’m human.”
