I believe the key to raising responsible children is to be involved and in the know with all aspects of their learning. You need to stay aware of what is happening in their lives, their community, and where to get help when it's needed.

These are exactly some of the reasons Lincoln Middle School is hosting their first "Parents University" this Saturday, January 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Lincoln Middle School staff, with a goal to improve students' lives, wanted to reach out to our parents and offer a central location to find valuable community and educational resources. We have invited great community leaders to participate, such as the United Way of Rock River Valley, Boys and Girls Club, Furst Staffing, SwedishAmerican Hospital, KP Counseling, YMCA of Rock River Valley, City of Rockford, Rockford Fire Department, U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos' office, Edward Jones Financial, Beefaroo, Illinois Rep. Maurice West and many more.

The schedule: Parents/guardians can choose from 16 topics and attend three 45-minute breakout sessions – each starting at 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and noon. Attendees can learn how to access their child's grades, more about teen mental health and interview skills.

This Parents University is free to attend and will even include lunch and activities for your kids, so no worry about snagging a sitter.

If you have any questions, just email Brian Weavel at Brian.Weavel@rps205.com, and he'd be more than happy to answer them for you.
