The School Lunch Item Every Illinois Student Loves
Lunch time in school holds a special place for many of us, especially when it was the time of day we most looked forward to.
In elementary school, my mom packed me lunch every morning, and I’d always get a few bucks to buy chocolate milk from the lunch line. By middle school, I was eating school lunch nearly every day, and by high school, I often forgot to pack one, so I’d mooch off friends’ plates or borrow a dollar to grab a snack from the vending machine.
I remember the pizza, hot dogs, Bosco sticks, cream of turkey soup, and chicken strips when I'd go through the lunch line. But surprisingly, none of those made the list of the most popular school lunch item in Illinois.
The School Lunch Item Every Illinois Student Loves
According to FoodServiceDirector, the top favorite school lunch item in Illinois is the classic chicken sandwich. While burritos, chicken nuggets, Bosco sticks, and sloppy joes also made the list of most-loved lunches across multiple states, the chicken sandwich ranked #1 as the go-to choice for many students in Illinois.
Every time I'd get a chicken sandwich, it wouldn't be cooked enough or overcooked to the point I couldn't even bite into it! I guess bringing your own lunch was always the better option, so you knew exactly what you were biting into.
Also, fun fact: we ranked as one of the states with the unhealthiest school lunches. Considering I went to public school my entire life in Illinois, I believe it. We didn't even have a salad bar! That's a luxury we couldn't afford, I guess.
