Illinois Travelers: Southwest Airlines Just Ditched Its Most Iconic Feature After 54 Years
If you've ever flown with Southwest Airlines, you know the unique (and sometimes stressful) open-seating process. No assigned seats, just a boarding group and a race to grab your favorite seat. Well, that longtime tradition is officially over.
As someone who used to travel like crazy when I was younger, it's crazy to see this change because I remember being so jealous of anyone who flew Southwest. I always wanted to know what it was like to have open seating! I got to experience it one time a couple years ago and it was terrifying. People are racing to get a good seat and will elbow you just to get to their seat first.

Southwest Airlines Just Ditched Its Most Iconic Feature After 54 Years
Southwest Airlines has made a major change as of January 27th, 2026. They've officially switched to assigned seating after 54 years. That means when you book your flight now, you'll pick (or be given) a specific seat ahead of time, just like most other airlines.

This change also introduces premium seating options. Travelers can pay extra for perks like more legroom or preferred seats closer to the front of the plane. For some, that's a win, especially if you're tired of anxiously boarding early just to avoid the dreaded middle seat.
Boarding itself is changing too. Instead of free-for-all lineup, Southwest is moving to a more structured, group-based system. It's a big shift from the casual style they originally had.
So what the change? According to the CEO Bob Jordan, open seating was actually one of the top reasons flyers chose other airlines. With this update, Southwest is aligning more closely with competitors while also creating new ways to boost revenue through seat upgrades.

Reactions have been mixed, yes. Some love the idea of having peace of mind knowing exactly where they're sitting. Others see this as the end of what made Southwest... Southwest.
