Here’s the Next Illinois Shopping Mall Closing Its Doors Forever

So many once-popular Illinois shopping malls have closed in the last year. The next suburban Chicago mall to close permanently has been struggling for many years.

All around the state, our shopping preferences no longer include heading to the mall. I'm never happy when I've exhausted all other options and am left with no choice but to head to a mall.

Unless that trip is to Woodfield Mall or an outlet mall somewhere. If I had to pick what shopping mall in Illinois will NEVER close, I'd have to pick Woodfield. There are new stores and places to eat coming to Woodfield soon.

The mall in Danville closed, Spring Hill Mall closed, and Eastland Mall in Bloomington is gone, too.

Traditional brick-and-mortar stores cannot compete with the convenience and diverse options offered by online shopping.

Some malls keep the lights on until they're hanging by a thread. That's the story with the latest Illinois mall closing announcement.

Stratford Square Mall, a product of the 1980s mall-building craze, has faced challenges while other enclosed malls adapted to changing retail landscapes. Despite efforts by the Mayor and Village Board to collaborate with the mall’s owner, Namdar, negotiations faltered. Consequently, the Village of Bloomingdale took the initiative to acquire the mall and its anchor stores independently. After consolidating the property earlier this year, the Village is now poised to embark on a transformative mixed-use development.

The above announcement was shared on the Village of Bloomingdale Facebook page. The post also shared the last day the 'mall' will be open to the public.

Stratford Square Mall is Closing on Sunday, April 21st

It's redevelopment time and the plans include "a blend of restaurants, entertainment venues, retail spaces, housing options, and public open spaces."
