Find a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck! Right?

Yeah, we all know that saying, but why do we actually think pennies are lucky?

This morning, I was walking from my gym back to my apartment and I found a penny on the ground. Whenever I find a penny, I pick it up, I put the sign of the cross on it and I put it in my shoe.

One time, my aunt's sister-in-law told me a story about a woman who did that with her penny and won a car or a bunch of money or something really awesome. While I don't remember all of the details, I can spend three seconds doing that to pennies if it means awesome things, so I have shoes that are constantly filled with cents.

Most people will pick up a "lucky penny" when they see it on the ground, some will only pick it up if it's heads up, but most of us agree pennies are lucky.

Why do we do this?

According to Wise Geek, we do it to ward off bad things from happening, as protection. We also do it because metal was once considered a gift from the Gods. Even just one penny.

What do you do when you see a penny?
