Red light cameras are meant to serve a purpose, despite drivers thinking otherwise.

WHY RED LIGHT CAMS?

The Village of Richton Park, Illinois uses this technology with safety in mind.

The goal of red light camera enforcement systems is to improve public safety by reducing injuries and deaths caused by accidents.

Rockford alone has seen a concerning increase in fatal traffic accidents in 2021, not to mention an increase in traffic accidents in general.

"Pay attention..."

Rockford's mayor, Tom McNamara told MyStateline accidents can be preventable and residents can help with that effort.

You can get off your cellphone, you can stop paying attention to everything that’s going on in your own vehicle, you can slow down, you can put all of your electronic devices down, and actually pay attention to the road.

As most of us should have learned in driver's ed, yellow lights me to slow down and proceed with caution not slam on the gas to make the light.
