If this story seems to be striking a note in your memory, it's because this sort of breakaway ice chunk story involving Green Bay has happened before.

Like, just last February.

The Emergency Call For Help Came In Around 10:00 Saturday Morning

According to WBAY.com, 40 people were ice fishing on a large chunk of ice that broke off from the shoreline, and began drifting out into Green Bay.

The following departments responded to the scene: the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, New Franken Fire, Green Bay Fire, WI DNR and the Coast Guard. The responding agencies were able to rescue everyone stranded out on the floating ice by noon. During the rescue, the ice floated about three-quarters of a mile from the shoreline. Although the ice remained ‘fairly stable’, Lt. McAuly said the ice’s condition was deteriorating rapidly and cracking up as it moved into open water.

As Mentioned Earlier, The Rescuers Have Been Through This Situation Before

Less than a year ago, in February of last year, over 60 ice fishermen (fisher-people? fisher-persons? fisher-folks?) in Door County needed rescuing after the ice they were fishing on broke into several sheets of ice, and separated them from the shore.

At first, the break in the ice was about ten feet, but in just a few hours, it had stretched to over a mile. Once again, the day was saved for all of them by the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin DNR and the U.S. Coast Guard. No one was injured.
