Confession: I love Ambien. I started using it about 10 years ago when I was going through a really rough time in life. Getting a good night's sleep was nearly impossible for me as I spent most nights wondering how I was going to pay rent, put food on the table and raise an 8 year old by myself.

What started out as something I took to get a good night sleep turned into something I never expected- it became fun. I hadn't taken it in a while but when realized I still had some, I decided to take it again to see if it still had an effect on me. It sure did. Turns out, when things aren't so bad in life, taking Ambien can be kind of entertaining- when you remember the things you did. If you don't, someone will surely tell you.

That's one of the dangerous side effects of taking Ambien. So, don't take this as me encouraging you to take it and I'm not an advocate for using it recreationally, but if you suffer from insomnia, taking Ambien might be offered as an option.

According to the Huffington Post, there are several factors to consider before taking it; they include:

It’s the #1 most common sleep aide found in blood and toxicology reports of people who commit suicide.

It’s an Amnesiac. This means that it induces forgetfulness. Due to the effects it has on your brain it’s likely that you may do things in your sleep or before bed that you will be incapable of remembering the next day. Like thinking your mosaic tile floor is a pond full of koi fish.

It’s the #1 sleeping pill that results in visits to the emergency room. Whatever, you do, no matter how disoriented you feel, let someone else take you if you feel it's necessary. Driving while on Ambien is extremely dangerous. I speak from experience on this one.

It’s the first pill that the FDA has suggested women take half the recommended dosage. Ladies, we have a much harder time falling asleep so often times we ignore this recommendation. I suggest trying ZzzQuil instead. This is what I use; it's non-habit forming and it works great.

It’s the #1 pill used in criminal defense cases. The combination of the amnesiac affects, the lack of sleep and the way the drug affects the brain are all to blame.

If anyone understands the stresses that come with not being able to get a good night's sleep, it's me. I'm right there with you, but when it comes down to it, it's probably best to avoid Ambien at all costs. I've had a lot of luck with ZzzQuil and there are no side effects. I wake up feeling refreshed and rested.

Another option is the Sense With Sleep Pill. With the Sense With Sleep Pill you can improve your sleep and learn how the environment of your bedroom can affect the quality of your rest and you'll wake up feeling great, not groggy.
