The challenges and the rewards of raising an autistic child. This mom shares her story from which we all could learn.

April is Autism Awareness Month

While the entire month of April is devoted to educating the public about this neurodevelopment disorder, Saturday, April 2nd is a particularly special day, it's World Autism Awareness Day. On a global scale, this is the day we Light It Up Blue (#LIUB).

Every morning on the radio I tell stories. The hope is that each story will make you feel something. I am deeply affected by other people's stories. In truth, being a good storyteller comes from listening more than talking. When I first met the woman you're going to meet in the video below, she was telling me a story and she wasn't even talking. Some people you can watch from across the room and just tell there are a lot of interesting things going on in their life. I knew within 5 minutes that I had to know her. In the 2 years that we've been friends, she's shared many wonderful stories and I'm eager to hear every single one. But one story resonates in my heart everyday. It's the story of raising her autistic son. More specifically, it's the story of one day when he was very young that she felt she couldn't be, to him, what she needed to be. As she shares her story, I wonder what you'll feel? What you'll learn? Will you have a better understanding of autism and how other families or perhaps your own find strength? Thank your for taking the time to watch.
