The Joy of Two Wheels and a Big Heart: Build-A-Bike Belvidere Returns
There's nothing like the feeling of your very first bike, the wobbly excitement, the sense of freedom, and that moment when the training wheels come off and you know you've got this. For more than 100 kids in our community, that magical moment is about to become reality.
Buid-A-Bike Belvidere Returns

Build-A-Bike is rollin' back to Belvidere on Wednesday, May 14, marking its 9th incredible year of turning bolts, spinning wheels, and changing lives.
This one-day event brings together volunteers, sponsors, and community leaders to assemble and donate brand-new bicycles to kids in need—kids who've been selected ahead of time, each one about to receive not just a bike, but a boost of joy, independence, and confidence.
More Than a Bike — It's a Boost
For many of the children, this is more than just getting a new ride, according to the press release. As program organizer Joe Hamblock puts it,
We're not just building bikes, we're building confidence, opportunity, and brighter futures.
Each child also gets a helmet and essential bike safety information to keep them safe as they take on the sidewalks, driveways, and bike paths ahead.
Powered By Community and a Lot of Heart
What makes Build-A-Bike so special? It's simplicity. Volunteers of all skill levels (yes, even those like me who once 'accidentally' installed handlebars backwards) roll up their sleeves and get it done, together.
Over the years, local schools, service groups, and generous donors have made it possible for this program to grow and thrive. This year, more than 100 bikes will be donated to local kids who could really use a reason to smile.
Here's How You Can Help
I might not be the best bike mechanic (ask my kids—they'll tell you), but what I can do is use my voice to ask you to get involved. Whether it's volunteering to help build, sponsoring a bike, or just spreading the word, your support matters.
