The Calgary Flames are investigating former Rockford IceHogs head coach Bill Peters, following the accusation that Peters directed racial slurs at a player while with the IceHogs, according to a report in The New York Times.

The USA Today on Tuesday reported that two of Aliu's teammates, who were in the locker room when Peters allegedly used the slurs, corroborated Aliu's story.

Aliu also suggested that after he spoke out against Peters, the coach wrote a letter to Chicago Blackhawks executives, advising them to send Aliu to the East Coast Hockey League, which is a demotion.

Peters coached the IceHogs from 2008-2011. Aliu played for the IceHogs in parts of three seasons from 2007 to 2010. Peters is currently the head coach of the NHL's Calgary Flames.

The Blackhawks released the following statement in response to the accusations:

The alleged actions by a former coach toward Akim Aliu while with the Rockford IceHogs are something we take seriously. The purported incident had not been reported or brought to our attention prior to yesterday and had no effect on any player personnel decision regarding Mr. Aliu.

Aliu is not the only former IceHogs player to speak out against Peters. Sean McMorrow, who played 25 games for the IceHogs in 2008-09, called Peters a "bad guy" in a tweet published on Tuesday.

Aliu and McMorrow seem to have been inspired to share their thoughts following the firing of Toronto Maple Leafs Head Coach Mike Babcock, who is also currently under scrutiny for his treatment of players.
