Not every day you hear about a cannabis-themed sandwich shop, but today is one of those days.

Have you heard of Cheba Hut? This unique sub shop toasts sandwiches and is getting ready to expand.

The word is that they are getting franchised and will open locations in states where Cheba Hut has yet to develop a footprint.

Eat This, Not That! says Cheba Hut franchisee WAHI plans to open in Virginia and 35 more locations in other states like New Mexico, Texas, and Montana.

While those are the plans, it would be crazy not to consider more Cheba Hut restaurants in Illinois.

According to the My Stateline website, Illinois collected $562 million in taxes from marijuana sales in 2022.

What that means is people are using cannabis products. Having a restaurant that leans into that lifestyle would do big bucks.

Right now, there are two Illinois Cheba Hut locations:

  • 1948 West Division Street
  • 3412 North Sheffield Avenue

Both are in Chicago and according to Yelp, both restaurants are well-reviewed. Laura M. from the Windy City said, "These might be the best subs in Wrigleyville."

Caleb J., also from Chicago, says, "I'm not gonna lie; this puts other places to shame." Tina L. remarked that they were "not exaggerating" when they mentioned this was the "best sub" they've ever had.

On the other hand, Nikhil C. in Edgewater said the service was not so good, in PG terms, and also claimed the "guy said I was pronouncing my own name wrong."

So, while Cheba Hut plans expansion outside Illinois, consider Rockford when looking for the next great city to call home.
