COVID-19 has put a hurtin' on all of us. It's taken away our normalcy; it's raised our stress and anxiety to near breaking-point levels, and for many families it has made it even harder to put food on the table.

With the 2020/2021 school year for RPS 205 beginning next week, a little of the burden will be relieved when kids receive breakfast and lunch at school, but the Northern Illinois Food Bank knows the need doesn't end there.

My daughter's school shared a flier on Facebook yesterday about free drive-thru food markets that will be happening all school year long for RPS families, and I knew I needed to pass along the info to families who need it:

  • WHAT: Kennedy Family Market
  • WHERE: Auburn High School, in the west side parking lot
  • WHEN: 4:30 - 6 p.m. on the following dates: September 14 and 28, October 12, November 16 and 30, December 14, January 11 and 25, February 8 and 22, March 15, April 5 and 19, May 3 and 17

RPS 205 families who utilize these markets will receive grocery boxes filled with cereal and breakfast foods, dairy products including eggs and milk, drinks, fresh produce, meat, snacks and crackers, canned goods and more.

Families are asked to wear masks and remain in their cars while volunteers place the food box in your back seat or trunk.

One more heads up, as we head into the winter months, if school is cancelled due to hazardous weather on one of the above dates, the drive-thru market will be cancelled as well.
