NOAA’s seasonal outlook has Illinois leaning warmer than average through October, November, and December. Translation: we might get to hang onto patio season a little longer. But don’t get too cozy, Illinois weather is like that friend who says they’re “five minutes away” when they haven’t even left the house yet. It’ll flip when it feels like it.

First Frost: Rockford and Beyond

So, when do we actually hit that first frost? For northern Illinois, including Rockford, the average date is around October 12–13. Central Illinois cools down closer to October 18, and southern spots can stretch it until Halloween or even early November, according to data shared by pjstar.com. Basically, if you’re north of I-80, your plants are living on borrowed time after the second week of October.

What Happened Last Year?

In 2024, Rockford saw frost settle in by mid-October, right on schedule. No big surprises there, unless you count the number of people still trying to grill in shorts that weekend.
