What Illinois’ New Gun Storage Bill Means for Families and Firearm Owners
Illinois lawmakers just passed a new bill that could change the way firearms are stored in homes across the state. Here's what Senate Bill 8 means for gun owners, families, and anyone concerned about safety.
Illinois Set to Expand Gun Storage Requirements

A new bill aimed at keeping firearms out of the hands of children and at-risk individuals has passed the Illinois General Assembly and is now waiting for Governor Pritzker's signature. Senate Bill 8 (SB8) would expand current safe-storage laws for gun owners in the state.
What's Changing Under Illinois Senate Bill 8
Right now, Illinois law requires gun owners to secure their firearms if a child under 14 lives in or visits the home. SB8 takes that a step further. Under the new legislation, that responsibility applies to any minor, regardless of age, and also to any "at-risk person or prohibited person" who might be present.
Penalties vary. A basic violation carries a $500 fine. That fine increases to $1,000 if the gun owner "reasonably should know" the person could access the firearm. If the unsecured gun is later used in a crime or suicide, fines could reach $10,000.
