How Illinois Likes Its Grilled Cheese: The Survey Says We’re Doing It Right
When it comes to comfort food, Illinois doesn’t mess around, especially when cheese is involved. A new nationwide survey just revealed how Americans build their ideal grilled cheese, and let’s just say Illinois came out looking pretty darn classic. From the bread to the butter (yes, butter), we’re doing things the right way… and apparently, the rest of the country agrees.
Illinois’ Grilled Cheese Playbook

A recent survey shared by the New York Post, from Talker Research and commissioned by Tillamook County Creamery Association, found that while Americans have plenty of opinions on their melty masterpieces, most of them line up with how we do it here in the Midwest. White bread still reigns supreme, and butter remains the gold standard for that crispy crunch we all crave. In true Illinois fashion, we’re not trying to reinvent the wheel, just toast it perfectly on both sides. And if you’re feeling fancy, a side of tomato soup never hurts, especially on one of those “is this fall or second winter?” Rockford afternoons.
The Cheesy Add-Ons We Love
Bacon, ham, and tomatoes topped the list of favorite extras nationwide. But in Illinois, the smart money’s on bacon, because we know everything’s better with bacon (and extra napkins).
Even Harrison Ford Has a Favorite
Speaking of Illinois legends, Chicago-born Harrison Ford also has a soft spot for grilled cheese. In a previous blog, we broke down his four-ingredient version featuring sharp cheddar, whole wheat bread, tomato slices, and — plot twist — a splash of Worcestershire sauce. If Indiana Jones can tweak tradition, so can you.
