Two Illinois Restaurants with Notorious Mobster Ties Revealed
According to Chowhound, two of the most notorious mobster restaurants in American history are apparently in Illinois.
They just published 14 Restaurants That Were Part of American Mobster History, and two Chicago restaurants made the list.
Two Very Mobster Restaurants in Illinois
Exchequer Restaurant & Pub (formerly 226 Club) ranked no. 6, and Green Mill was dubbed no. 13.
At the very top of the list was Rao's in New York, NY, which was named the most well-known mobster restaurant in American history.
Are These The Definitive Mobster Restaurant Rankings?
While only two restaurants in Illinois made the list, you should remember there are plenty (especially in Chicago and beyond) that weren't considered.
Exchequer seems to deserve its notoriety when you realize that over the years and numerous name changes, the old 226 Club has retained much of its roaring 20s charm with a famous balcony, distinct chandeliers, and secret speakeasy doorway remaining intact.
Chowhound was as equally complimentary toward Green Mill calling it "arguably the oldest jazz club in the country that's still up and running today." The Green Mill is still operating today, including its iconic neon green sign with plenty of framed pics adorning the wall, including many that pay homage to Al Capone.
Other Mobster-Related Restaurants in America
In case you're keeping score at home, New York was home to most of the iconic restaurant mobster hangs, but Nevada, Florida, Connecticut, and Louisiana all ended up on the list, too.
