It looks like Illinois needs to get ready because a significant winter storm is going to develop over the weekend.

This could bring heavy snowfall in parts of the state.

While we'll feel some snow today in the Rockford area, bringing snowy and icy conditions, weather forecasters are busy working on what will happen on Sunday.

Kevin Jeanes, Meteorologist for NBC5 in Chicago, believes the current storm track indicates that snow will likely hit the central and southern parts of Illinois, missing Chicago and, most importantly for us, Rockford.

NBC5:

A significant winter storm developing Sunday keeps almost all the snow south of us.

That said, the storm's trajectory could shift and push the weather north in the coming days, which could affect us in Northern Illinois.

In addition, areas close to the lake could receive some snow as cold air moves across the warmer waters of the Great Lakes, adding to the presumed snowfall totals.

Of course, if that happens, travel would become treacherous in those affected areas, and I'm certain officials in both major cities will recommend preparing for challenging road conditions.

This storm comes as Illinois finally settles into the heart of winter. In the coming weeks, there will likely be even more snow opportunities.
