Only One Legal Way To Have Christmas Lights On Your Car In Illinois
I saw a Jeep wrapped in the most beautiful blue Christmas lights last night. The lights looked amazing but I wondered if that was even legal. Here's what I found out.
I'm just like everybody else at this time of year. Fill all spaces with holiday decorations. Why leave a space UN-LIT.
I've never thought about wrapping my vehicle with Christmas lights before, that is until I saw a Jeep stopped at an intersection in the dark.
What caught my attention was the shade of cobalt blue LED lights on the Jeep.
It was in the early 2000s when you started seeing LED Christmas lights in stores and that blue was so popular that it was hard to find in stores.
I'm staring at this Jeep as I drove through the intersection wishing I had gotten a photo because it looked incredible.
When I got to work, I went looking to see if we all could decorate our vehicles like this.
Here's what I found out:
First, I found this from Carparts.com in a story about how to hook Christmas lights up to your vehicle
The general consensus is “no”—it is technically not legal to have Christmas lights (and other light-up decorations) on the inside or outside of your car.
So, if your vehicle is in a parade, the lights wrapped around the outside would be completely legal.
I refind my search.
Is it Legal to Have Christmas Lights on Your Vehicle in Illinois?
I found Illinois' vehicle lighting code at ILGA.gov:
Some lighting combinations are legal BUT Christmas lights are not one of them. The code reads:
Unless otherwise expressly authorized by this Code, all other lighting or combinations of lighting on any vehicle shall be prohibited.
It's illegal to have Christmas lights on your car in Illinois
It's illegal but I think this car sure looks cool.
To see how the lights were rigged to the vehicle, watch the video on YouTube.
I guess this Corvette below is a few different kinds of illegal then.
