Unspoken Rules Every Illinoisan Should Know About
I’ve lived in Illinois for more than 20 years now, and I can promise you there are certain rules everyone knows. You’re either a Cubs or Cardinals fan, Chicago-style pizza and hot dogs are a must, and a road trip along Route 66 should be on your list. But did you know there are also some unspoken rules about living in Illinois?
You Must Listen to the Blues
Blues music is very popular in Illinois, especially in Chicago. Visit a blues club, enjoy an amazing Chicago meal, whether it’s pizza, a hot dog, or an Italian beef sandwich—and just relax. There are plenty of opportunities to catch a blues band playing throughout the city.
Do the “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off” Experience
While you’re in Chicago, recreate a little movie magic. Visit the Chicago Art Institute, grab pizza at the famous Giordano’s, and, if you’re lucky, maybe you’ll even stumble upon a parade where you can jump on a float and sing just like in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
There’s So Much to Do in Southern Illinois
Take in a football game at SIU–Carbondale, sample some of the best wine on the Southern Illinois wine trails, and explore beautiful places like Jackson Falls, Kinkaid Lake, and Bell Smith Springs. I’ll admit, some of these spots are new to me, but apparently, they’re must-see destinations.
So Many Walking Trails, So Little Time
No matter where you visit in Illinois, there are walking trails everywhere. From trails right here in Quincy to scenic paths in Southern Illinois and state parks across the state, you never have to travel far to enjoy the outdoors.

Try All the Local Food Specialties
Skip the national chains and try a local restaurant instead. Illinois is known for its incredible food, including Italian beef sandwiches, Chicago-style pizza, hot dogs, pork tenderloins, and more. I promise, you won’t be disappointed.
