I've never felt quite so vindicated in my life. It's also another excellent example of "procrastination pays off."

Illinois Tollway Is Sending Out New Stickers

That's because Illinois Tollway has just announced it will automatically send new I-PASS stickers to customers using the old plastic transponders.

Transponders Are Nearing the End of Their Life

The tollway folks believe the transponders are nearing the end of their battery life and are trying their best to get ahead of it. I know for a fact that they held special events at Driver's License facilities to try and get the ball rolling.

New Stickers Are Free, Smaller, and Simpler

Personally, I wasn't buying it. I waited until I got something that told me my I-PASS was no longer working. That piece of mail never came, and it looks like I wasn't the only one.

The tollway claims the stickers are smaller and less expensive than the old plastic transponders, and no deposit is needed.

Wait, did we pay a deposit for the transponder? If so, can I have it back? Turns out, yes (as a credit)!

A representative from the Illinois Tollway reached out and said,

When you receive a letter from the Tollway informing you that it’s time to swap your old transponder for a new Sticker Tag, your transponder deposit is rolled into your I-PASS account and is used to pay the tolls you accrue.

A perk of the sticker is that they won't expire, so that's a good thing, I guess.

Here’s How the Stickers Actually Work

If you're wondering how these stickers work, MyStateline says they "use radio frequency identification to communicate with the tolls, eliminating the need for batteries."

I just need to know who's going to remove the old transponder and place the new sticker on my windshield. Goody, this is a new thing for me to procrastinate on.
