She wanted to honor her dad, a Civil War veteran who had raised her and her siblings alone, so on June 10, 1910, the celebration was promoted by the local YMCA and area churches, according to RubyTuesday.

History.com says it was on July 5, 1908, that a West Virginia church sponsored the nation's first event explicitly in honor of fathers, but it was a one-time commemoration and not an annual holiday.
