Six school districts in Northern Illinois are under investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice over concerns about teaching sexual orientation and gender ideology in the classroom.

Tough Time to Be a Kid

As the mom of two daughters, ages 12 and 10, I often find myself thinking: "it wasn't this tough when I was a kid".

I never had to worry about social media pressures, and I sure didn't spend my days watching "influencers" tell me what should I do, buy, think, or like.

Being a parent in a social media age isn't for the faint of heart either. We can monitor what our kids do and see online, but social norms are changing all the time. How do we educate and/or protect our kids from them?

Gender identity and sexual orientation is a hot button issue all across this country, and right now six Stateline-area school districts are bearing the brunt of it.

Illinois School Districts Being Investigated by the U.S. Department of Justice

Truthfully, I avoid talking politics like it is the plaque, so I will just tell you the facts.

On Thursday, April 30, six school districts in Northern Illinois were blindsided when they received letters like this from the U.S. Department of Justice:

Freeport isn't the only school district under investigation in Northern Illinois. The list also includes:

  • DeKalb Community Unit School District 428
  • Galena Unit School District 120
  • Meridian Community Unit School District 223
  • Oregon Community Unit School District 220
  • Stockton Community Unit School District 206

An article from Mystateline.com says:

the investigations will determine whether the districts included sexual orientation and gender ideology (SOGI) in any pre-K through 12th-grade classes, and whether parents were properly notified of their right to opt their children out of that instruction.

Essentially, the Department of Justice wants to make sure schools aren't keeping parents in the dark when it comes to what students are being taught about sexual orientation and gender ideology.

As I write this, only one Stateline-area school district has responded publicly about the Department of Justice's investigation:

No information has been shared about when the DOJ investigations will be complete, or if other Illinois school districts will be added to the list.

If you are a parent that is concerned about what your children might be learning at school, contact your local school district immediately.
