Lately, my phone has been non-stop lighting up with calls from random numbers.  Some are nearby area codes, others are from out of state, and some say, "unknown number'.  It's getting to the point where I can't do anything on my phone without someone calling.

If you've noticed the same thing, you're not imagining it.  It's getting out of hand!

Scammers are constantly changing their tactics, and one of the most common tricks is "neighbor spoofing."  That's when they make it seems like they're calling from a local number to increase the chances that you'll answer.  Seeing a number with an Illinois area code can make it feel like the call is from a nearby business, doctor's office, or legitimate source.

Another reason you're seeing more spam calls is because your phone number might have, unfortunately, been leaving on a marketing list or data broker database after signing up for online accounts, entering contests, making purchases, or having your information exposed in a data breach.  Once your number starts circulating, it can be sold or shared, leading to even more unwanted calls.

The best thing you can do is avoid answering any calls from unknown numbers.  If the call is important or urgent, they'll leave a voicemail.  You can also help reduce your spam by enabling your phone's built-in spam protection (I just did this!).

This will:

  • block repeat offenders
  • reduce telemarketing calls
  • filter out important callers

Even having your phone ask the caller why they're calling can help you decide whether to answer the call or not.

Unfortunately, spam calls aren't disappearing anytime soon, but knowing why they're happening can make them a little less frustrating!  So, if your phone has been ringing off the hook lately, you're not the only one dealing with it!
