Madison Is Home to the Largest Gay Hockey League in the U.S.
Fans of hockey stories that center heart, tension, and found family might be surprised to learn that one of the most welcoming leagues in the country is in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin’s Largest Gay Hockey League Keeps Growing

The Madison Gay Hockey Association (MGHA), founded in 2006, has grown into the largest gay hockey league in the United States. What began as a response to the toxic culture some players experienced in traditional hockey has expanded to nearly 350 skaters across multiple skill divisions, and it’s still growing.
League leaders recently added more ice time to meet demand, with beginners, intermediate players, and former college athletes all sharing the same organization.

A Different Kind of Hockey Culture in Wisconsin
MGHA was intentionally built to feel different. Community comes first. Competitiveness comes second.
That culture shows up in small but powerful ways — like goalies congratulating first-time scorers or teammates making sure the newest skater still gets the puck. Players say the emphasis is always on encouragement over ego.
Hockey for Every Skill Level
The league welcomes people who have never skated before. One of the first lessons? How to fall, and how to get back up again.
While standings still matter and teams take pride in their performance, friendliness consistently wins out over rivalry.
Games are held Sunday nights at local Madison rinks, where for many players, the league has become something bigger than hockey — a true home away from home.
