Maybe it's just me but I always feel like springtime is the best time for a day trip.

It's probably because the weather is starting to change. Getting out of the house after being cooped up for months and finally ready to see the world, even if it means just a quick trip somewhere in your home state.

For me and my family, summer is loaded with family stuff and sports. While there's still plenty of that in the spring, the opportunity to get out for a quick day trip happens in the spring.

When Illinois shut down in March of 2020, it included the closure of state parks. When they finally reopened in May, I thought it would be a good time to get out and see one.

It was one of the highlights of the year and it turns out it is one of the top day trip destinations in America and the best in Illinois.

Fodor's Travel took a look at the 20 Best Day Trips in the U.S. and the website says Starved Rock State Park is the 2nd best spot overall.

Fodor's Travel:

The park, which was once home to Native Americans, is a National Historic Landmark filled with canyons, waterfalls, and sandstone bluffs boasting views of the Illinois River. In addition, visitors can spend the day exploring 13 miles of hiking trails. Once you've worked up an appetite, stop for lunch at the Starved Rock Lodge.

Now it's got me thinking I should plan another trip to Starved Rock this spring.
