Why Illinois Locals Say May is the Best Month to Visit Starved Rock
If you've ever been to Starved Rock, you know it's known to be one of Illinois' most beautiful natural gems.
As we inch closer to summer, I start hiking at Starved Rock a lot more. Hiking is a great way to connect with nature, get some exercise in, and enjoy breathtaking views. If you ask any locals when the best time is to visit, we'll always say between spring and summer, aka May.
Why Illinois Locals Say May is the Best Month to Visit Starved Rock
There's something about May that makes sightseeing extra special. Maybe it's because everything is blossoming, the smell of rain is in the air, and the breeze is just the right temperature. The trails feel alive, more families are out and about, and shops all around Utica are open for visitors from all walks of life!
The trails are incredibly beautiful, that's why I go so often! My favorite trails to hike.

It's a great town to stop and check out before heading for a hike. I did it just a few weekends ago and loved their Antiquin' Weekend local market! There's a different market and local event happening pretty much every weekend in Utica, too. Something for everyone to experience.
So if you’re looking for a spring adventure close to home, trust the locals—May is when Starved Rock truly shines. Just don’t forget your camera, your hiking shoes, and maybe a little extra time to explore Utica, too. You never know what you'll find—I wasn't expecting to fall in love with there vintage local market, but I did!
