Like they say, "April showers bring May flowers"!  And while we all look forward to the blooms of spring, it's important to remember that spring showers can also bring... tornadoes.

April in Illinois is notorious for being the peak of tornado season.  April through June are the months we'll see an increase in tornado watches, and with the unpredictable weather and storms we get it might be brutal out here.

How should we prepare for tornado season?  Well, if you have kids, you should definitely run through this list:

  • Find a designated place away from windows to take cover
  • Keep a first aid kit, non-perishable foods, and extra water in your "safe place"
  • Secure all windows, doors, and outdoor furniture like grills, deck umbrellas, etc
  • Make sure your kids know the difference between a "watch" and "warning"
  • Make sure phones are charged & have extra battery packs available
  • Run through tornado drills a few times a year before April arrives

I've made sure to keep my weather alerts turned on because you never know when a disastrous storm will tear through the Midwest.  Seriously, the weather is so unpredictable here!  One day it's 70 degrees and breezy, the next it's snowing and 20 degrees, and then spring arrives on time.

While we can't control the weather and Mother Nature, we can control how we react in life-changing situations like this.  Stay safe this tornado season and happy Spring!
