Phone Scam Warning for Residents of Winnebago County

The Winnebago County Sheriff's has issued a warning for all those living in the county. A new phone scam has is looking for unpaid taxes.

In a story published today by mystateline.com, at least one resident has gotten a call from someone who claims to represent the Winnebago County Recorder's Office.

They informed the resident that he owed unpaid taxes and fees from previous years.

The caller was asked to pay those taxes and fees over the phone.

What should you do if you get a similar call:

1. According to officials, nobody from the Recorder's office will ever call you looking for unpaid taxes or fees to be paid over the phone.
2. Call your local police.
