Rockford police have issued an urgent warning to Rockford area motorists about skimming devices they found at local gas stations.

In a statement issued on social media on Thursday, Rockford police said:

RPD has recently recovered skimming devices off of gas pumps. Skimmers collect credit/debit card information that can then be used to create a new card or sold on the dark web. Watch the video to know what to look for at the pump, and ways to avoid falling victim to skimmers!

It is unclear at this time which gas stations the devices were discovered by police. These devices are used to gather your credit or debit card information. This information is often then used or sold by criminals, and can also be used in identity theft.

Motorists are advised to pay close attention when they pay at the pump. These devices appear on the credit card readers on the actual gas pump. If you want to be certain, thought it is an extra hassle do one of two things:

  • 1. Never pay with a debit card at the pump. use a credit card. Malicious credit card charges can always be disputed with the credit card company. Debit card transactions  are more difficult to dispute as the money is instantly withdrawn.
  • 2. If you use a debit card, pay inside. Yes it is a hassle, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

Rockford police have not identified the names or locations of the gas stations where the skimming devices were found.
