After the Supreme Court struck down many tariffs put in place during former President Donald Trump’s administration, a giant financial question popped up: what happens to all the money collected?
We’re talking billions of dollars paid by U.S. companies, costs that economists say mostly ended up being passed along to consumers anyway. (Hi, that’s us.)

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker quickly jumped in, saying Illinois families could be owed about $1,700 each, totaling more than $8 billion statewide.
Which sounds amazing… until reality shows up.

So… Where’s the Money?
Here’s the honest answer right now: nobody knows.
The Supreme Court ruling didn’t explain how refunds would actually work, and even federal officials admit the process could take months, years, or a whole lot of courtroom arguing.
Some companies are already suing to get their money back. Whether any of that trickles down to regular Illinois families? That part is very much a shrug emoji.

So yes… technically, Illinois might be owed money.
